Blog – Yarn Deals And Coupons

As a crocheter I am always looking for yarn deals and my go to places are Hobby Lobby and Michaels. These shops are available in my town so it’s easy to buy the same type of yarn if I ran out halfway through my project.

Below are some comparison charts between various deals in Hobby Lobby and Michaels. It might not be very accurate but you get the idea.

I took examples of two types of yarn, one acrylic and one cotton. I assumed the original price of acrylic yarn as $4.99 and cotton yarn as $3.99. I am purchasing 4 skeins in all the examples to make it similar quantity.

Hobby Lobby

  1. 30% off on all yarn: Most of the time, there is only one type of deal at Hobby Lobby which is 30% off alternate week. Hobby Lobby runs this deal throughout the year so you need to know which week to go shopping. Coupons for this deal are readily available in store.

Note: You can buy any number of skeins as 30% off is on each individual skein.

Michaels

There are three types of deals in Michaels.

  1. Get 20% off on any Regular price item.
  2. Buy One, Get One 50% off.
  3. Buy Two and Get One off

Let’s dive into some details about these three deals

  1. Get 20% off on any one Regular price item: This deal is not similar to Hobby Lobby 30% off because at Michael’s 20% off is only on one skein of yarn and not all the yarns you purchase. While at Hobby Lobby during 30% off week all yarns are 30% off. To take advantage of this deal you can take two or three friends with you so that each friend can purchase yarn separately and take 20% off on their purchase. You can then pay back your friends later. Another option will be go multiple times and buy one item in each trip. But that’s more hassle and I won’t recommend that. In the below example, only acrylic yarn is 20% off and not the cotton yarn.

Note: Does matter how many skeins you buy, because you get 20% off on only one item

  1. Buy One, Get One 50% off: This deal is not available in Hobby Lobby. This deal is only in Michaels and you will need to check the store to see which week they are running this deal. In this example I am purchasing 2 skeins of acrylic yarn and 2 skeins of cotton yarn and I am getting the 2nd skein 50% off.

Note: For this you will need to buy an even number of yarns of same type.

  1. Buy Two and Get One off: In this example I am purchasing a total of 6 skeins of yarn because it’s buy two, get one free. But the last column will give us the price per skein for comparison.

Note: As mentioned earlier for this deal you will need to buy at least 3 skeins of each type of yarn.

Conclusion:

From the above charts, the last column shows the price per skein. At Hobby Lobby the price per skein comes down to $3.49. At Michaels the price per skein is $2.99 which is lowest with 3rd option “Buy two Get One off”. So when you are working on a big project and need to buy yarn in bulk then Michael’s 3rd option “Buy Two and Get one off” is the best one.

When you have a small project and just need a couple of skeins then Hobby Lobby 30% off is the better option.
